Scholarship Agreements

Elsie Belliston

Agreement Date: unknown

Scholarship Requirements:

  • Purpose of establishing and maintaining in the Brigham Young University College of Family Living an annual scholarship for study

Recipient Requirements:

  • Preferably Graduate study beyond Bachelor's degree
  • Students in financial need
  • High scholastic standing
  • All things being equal, any descendent of Albert H. Belliston who shall apply and be eligible for said scholarship shall be given preference

N. Stanley and Olive D. Fagg and Hilga L. Johnson

Original Agreement Date: December 15, 1986

Recipient Requirements:

  • Student in Department of Family Living

  • Specifically for "family relationships"

    (This request was made in a letter dated December 22, 1986 with a memo from the LDS Foundation stating that the scholarship "included a provision that the donor may meet from time to time to discuss selection, philosophy and the overall purpose of the scholarship with the University Scholarship Selection Committee.")

  • Financially in need

  • Strong commitment to completing their education

  • Satisfactory academic progress

  • Committed to the moral code of the university

  • The University shall not have the duties of a trustee.

Additional Requests for Scholarship:

  • At lease 1 "worthy" student from Ricks would be granted a scholarship each year to BYU Family Science Department

    (This request was made in a letter dated March 9, 1998. A note from the Scholarship Office is attached to this letter stating that it is a request for a change to the agreement, but it is at our department's discretion. They advise that we "not make a permanent and binding change by modifying the agreement, but that (we) handle it on a more year by year basis.")

  • The donors would like to receive notification and background information on the individual recipients each year and notification of any recipient who has felt the scholarship has given opportunity for learning and serving.


Belle Wilson Hales

Revised Agreement Date: February 21, 1986

Scholarship Requirements:

  • Award should be transferred to the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences
  • The scholarship should be equal to at least one semester's tuition, undergraduate or graduate.
  • Monies beyond that should be left to accrue to an amount to equal the tuition before additional scholarships are given.
  • Scholarship should be kept in one department, preferably the Department of Family Sciences
  • The selection should be made by the Dean or Department, not a general scholarship committee.

Donor Requests:

  • A prestigious scholarship that would carry on year after year, and be of real economic significance to the recipient(s).
  • A copy of mother's life story continue to be given to the scholarship recipients.

Mrs. Helen Hayes

Agreement Date: August 1977

Recipient Requirements:

  • Equal weight given to: (a) Academic achievement; (b) Moral Worthiness; and

(c) Financial Need.

  • Any recipient who qualifies for an award shall automatically be eligible to receive an additional award the second year.
  • Because selection is to be based on high school scholastic achievement, it is assumed that it would have to go to an incoming freshman student.
  • The only stipulation suggested in the selection of the recipient is that the recipient be a girl going into Food Science & Nutrition.

Scholarship Requirements:

  • Selection will be made by undergraduate scholarship committee.
  • The donor would like to be furnished with names and addresses of proposed recipients.

MFHD Research

  • Funded by proceeds from the sale of a book authored by Marriage, Family, and Human Development professors and students. A number of students played key roles in the data collection, analysis, and write-up of findings.
  • In recognition of the contribution that students continually make to the research process in the Marriage, Family, and Human Development Department, this award is given to a student who shows promise as a family scholar and who will share research findings with families.

George Robinson

Agreement Date: Unknown

Recipient Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student in the Department of Family Sciences
  • Committed to completing their education
  • Will abide by the honor code
  • Demonstrate scholastic achievement by maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Preference to students with financial need
  • Those receiving are eligible for awards in more than one academic year
  • BYU shall not have the duties of a trustee.

Donor Requests:

  • Advised annually of the fund's balance and earnings, the name or names of those receiving awards from the fund, and the amounts dispersed to each.
  • Encourage, but place no obligation, on those who receive awards from this fund to contribute to the fund at some future date should their circumstances allow.
  • Those receiving awards correspond with the donors, providing information about their background, interests, and future plans.
