MFHD Travel Policy

MFHD faculty are strongly encouraged to participate in national and international conferences in their specialty areas. This is vital for networking, faculty development, research finding dissemination, and for projecting visibility in the field. MFHD faculty are typically fully funded for travel to one national conference per year, as long as they are presenting and/or participating on a national conference committee. Second conferences, international conference travel, conference attendance only, and travel for other purposes are considered on a case-by-case basis as measured against faculty productivity and potential benefit to faculty development and to the department. Additional travel beyond one conference is also determined by resource availability.

Graduate students who are presenting with a faculty member on a project they have contributed to can be funded at a minimal level to be determined each year based on resource availability. But, only after faculty travel needs are met.

The MFHD chair is responsible for making all travel determinations and may consult with the MFHD executive committee in the decision-making process. Requests for upcoming year travel should be made to the MFHD chair by mid-November each year. Faculty should be informed by early January as to which trips are approved. The chair reserves the right to hold some funds in reserve for unanticipated faculty travel needs that might occur during the year.

As per college policy, undergraduate student conference travel and travel for research purposes (e.g., data collection) should be covered out of grant or award money. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the MFHD program chair, the SFL Director, and the FHSS dean or his/her designee.
