Marriage, Family and Human Development Marriage, Family and Human Development

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program in Marriage, Family and Human Development. We hope the following answers to our most frequently asked questions will be helpful.

Deadlines

We admit students to our graduate program for the coming fall semester only. The application deadline each year is January 10th. The application is available online, and most of it is submitted electronically. You can access this application and instructions for applying through the Office of Graduate Studies website at: http://www.byu.edu/gradstudies/index.html. If you do not have access to the Internet, please contact Graduate Studies at 801-422-4091 and request an application.

Once your application arrives at Brigham Young University, it is processed by the Office of Graduate Studies and forwarded to our department. Because the applications are reviewed by an admissions committee shortly after the deadline, it is advantageous to submit the entire application before January 10th to facilitate the process.

GRE

Along with the application, it is critical that you send your GRE scores. Consideration of your application will be delayed without them. The GRE general test is all that is required - not the subject test. The GRE test is administered during the months of October, December, April and June. Please contact the university testing center nearest you for specifics regarding actual dates on which the tests are administered and registration services. You will need to take the test early enough that your scores will be mailed to the University before our application deadline. The GRE testing is also available through Sylvan Learning Centers. If Sylvan is part of your community, you may wish to contact them for specifics.

Expectations

The average GRE score for masters students accepted into the MFHD program has been 1050-1100 (VQ). For doctoral students, the average was 1125-1175 (VQ). The average GRE Writing Assessment score for both masters and doctoral admits was 5. Also computed and reviewed with your application is a GPA of your last 60 hours. This GPA must be at least a 3.0. The average GPA (on the last 60 hours) for a masters applicant admitted has been a 3.5. The average GPA (on the last 60 hours) for a doctoral applicant admitted has been a 3.8. Although an undergraduate degree in Family Sciences is not required, some background in the social sciences area is recommended before pursuing the Marriage, Family, and Human Development graduate programs.

If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call (801-422-2060).

Sincerely,

Rose Marie Morrell

Graduate Secretary
